Jay Shree Swaminarayan

The Crisis : a real test of Vairagya

Surrender to God is the best devotion

Chapter-74

On the eleventh day of the first fortnight of the month of Vaishakh of Samvat 1876, Shriji Maharaj was seated in the Durbar of Shri Dada Khachar near the temple of Shri Vasudev Narayan, underneath a margosa tree on a cot at Gadhada. He was dressed in all white. Saints and devotees from the various places were assembled before him.

Then Shriji Maharaj said, "Vairagya and the intensity of spiritual wisdom which are the attributes of a devotee are put to real test when a devotee is confronted either by the alluring Panchvishayas or by adverse circumstances which bring up on him calamities involving either loss of wealth or reputation or poverty for some period but we have our own views about such experiences according to our conscience.

Then Muktanand Swami said, "At heart we side with the devotee, and that too with full understanding that many persons can be accomodated in the Satsang if such Satsang is of high standard but when such Satsang is derided at, no person can be accomodated. So we feel elated as well as sad."

Shriji Maharaj said in reply, "Since we are dedicated devotees of Shri Krishna Narayan, we should submit to his will which is for our ultimate good. As such, if he desires an unhindered flow of Satsang it shall be so accordingly. And if he desires otherwise, we should accept even that willingly. If Lord Narnarayan sets us on the elephant, we should accept it willingly. On the other hand, if he sets us on a donkey, we should accept it with pleasure. But in no case should we recede from the lotus feet of the Lord. Our Lord Narnarayan performs penance sitting under a wild berry tree,in a secluded place. He is detached from all worldly pleasures. We are humble servents of such Lord Narnarayan. He is our master, our husband. As, a married woman gives more importance to her husband than to the ornaments, dresses and other sense objects. We too are required to give lesser amount of attention and importance to those worldly attractions. It is good if a devotee desires for his God the happiness and the worldly pleasures to submit the same in the service of God. But such a devotee, should not desire to enjoy such objects. Lord is not at all interested in the enjoyment of worldly objects, but accepts it from the devotee as token of his devotion. And Bhagwan if was desirous of worldly objects and enjoyments, would not have given away his prevailance on cosmos. Brahmpur, Golok, Radhikaji, Lakshmiji to perform penance under a wild berry tree in a secluded place! Therefore, Bhagwan has no desire for worldy pleasures. Compared to other incarnations, our Lord Nararayandev is very highly detached and performs penance for benediction of the souls. He would not sit there and eat wild berries, if he has desire for the material pleasures. On this earth, fools even continue to enjoy wealth and worldly pleasures, then in the case of God, Lord Naranarayandev is omnipresent supreme ruler of the cosmos. If he would have been desirous of it. he would keep atleast a few villages for his own use about that place! But our Supreme Lord does not desire for any such thing. When our God is at such a highest hight of Tyag, we devotees too are required to maintain such detachment and forsaking and should feel happy with the progress in Satsang as per desire of God. If God desires so entire world will become Satsangi, and if he desires there shall be decrease in Satsang. But in both such situations, we should not feel happiness or sorrow for the state. Everything moves as per desire of God, therefore, like a dried leaf moving on the movement of the air, we too are required to move in accordance to desire of Lord Narnarayandev and should concentrate fully in devotion of God without any sorrow or worry in our mind.
